Kennedy Heights Arts Center is a community arts center based in Cincinnati, Ohio. With their new website, KHAC had two primary goals in mind: make their website more informative and engaging for artists and the local community, and automate the process of registering for classes which the center offers.
My first list of tasks included a number of modifications and tweaks to the newly built WordPress theme. Following brand standards and the client’s requests and specifications, I completed these quickly and efficiently to ensure the site’s foundation was properly built, and would allow for ease of modification and further additions later in the project.
The largest component of the new KHAC site was the event ticketing and registration system. Prior to the construction of their new website, KHAC had a very manual and paper-based approach to managing their events, which they were eager to leave behind with the new site. With this in mind, I knew it would be important to find a powerful and easy-to-manage system to integrate into the new KHAC site to make it easier to manage registrations than ever before. As part of this huge task, the first major question was which system to use. After looking at several options, I found Event Espresso, which met all of my criteria for a good fit, and seemed to have a very active community of contributors and developers using the product.
While integrating Event Espresso into the new KHAC site, I tapped into the plugin’s API and extensive feature set to configure the plugin perfectly for KHAC. Among this process, I imported a list of classes to offer at site launch, configured details on the registration and purchase processes specific to KHAC, and built custom email templates to send to both registrants and KHAC for different events related to the event registration process. In addition, I tied in the public-facing Event Espresso interface with the site’s WordPress theme to ensure every element was styled according to the KHAC brand. Once these tasks were complete, Event Espresso was fully integrated into the site, and ready for the site launch.
In addition to integrating Event Espresso into the site, I established a donation system which ties into the PayPal API, an intent-based system to direct site visitors to content relevant to their intents, and training some of KHAC’s team members on how to use their new site. As a result of my work on the new KHAC site, managing events and event registration has been easier than ever for the KHAC team, and site visitors experience a clean, responsive design that reflects the KHAC brand.
